you paid for this: abolishing thanksgiving
*takes a deep breath*
I've been on social media a long time. My generation invented social media. I started a twitter account in 2009, and still actively use it. I know the difference between People Who Have Been On Twitter and People Who Have Not, and I don't mean that as any kind of moral judgment. It's not cool to be an active user on any social media platform, certainly not one owned by arguably the biggest loser on the planet, Elon Musk.
When twitter people (me) say something on the internet, we're often doing it with humor. We use a technique called exaggeration. When we post a flippant opinion and use a word like "literally," we almost never mean it, well, literally. The other day, I posted an opinion on threads, which is like twitter but through instagram. The opinion was about Thanksgiving. The fury was quick. People do not want anyone to feel negatively about their favorite holiday. Here's what I said:

The people actively using threads are like Your Mom On Facebook in 2005, but somehow it's worse now because Your Mom On Facebook is who is on facebook, and it's not 2005.
But in the past decade or so, you cannot joke online without risking it landing in front of masses of people who want to tell you about yourself. Sure, posting online in a public place means people can and probably will respond to you with what they think, and that's the whole point, I guess, but the conclusions people are jumping to! The assumptions! The intensity!
What I posted about abolishing Thanksgiving wasn't a joke, but it was a bit of hyperbole that led hundreds of people to assume I meant something I very much did not say.
It turns out that if you don't like Thanksgiving and don't think it should exist, everyone will assume you're referring to the holiday's history, which I wasn't. Or wasn't only referring to.
So here's my explanation and my full feelings on the fuckass holiday that is Thanksgiving.
Why I Think We Should Abolish Thanksgiving
Though this isn't what prompted my post, we can start here.
The history
Yes, the history of Thanksgiving is disgusting.
